Transplant saplings into fertile, well-draining garden beds in late March or April.
- 2
Tall colorful flower spikes develop strongly from May through July, with repeat flushes in autumn.
- 3
Pinch young plants at 10-15 cm to encourage vigorous branching and multiple flower spires.
- 4
Tolerates light frosts; provide shelter or mulch during unexpected cold snaps.
Care Instructions
Water at the base of the plant to keep foliage dry and deter rust or powdery mildew.
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 3 to 4 weeks during active flowering.
Cut spent flower spikes back to the main stem to stimulate new lateral blooming stems.
Stake taller varieties in windy valley locations to prevent stems from lodging.
